After a flight to China: wheelchair, oxygen or ambulance?

A wheelchair request with the airline is different from a medically supported journey on the road.

Start with the clinical request, not the vehicle label

Ask the treating clinician whether the traveller can remain seated, move from seat to vehicle, and travel without clinical care. If oxygen, a stretcher or monitoring is needed, ask for the specific requirement and confirm it can be supplied for the ground segment. Do not choose equipment solely because it was used during a previous journey.

Airline support stops at its handover boundary

A wheelchair booking may help with parts of the flight and terminal process; it does not by itself book a staffed ground ambulance. Likewise oxygen approved for a flight does not automatically continue into a road vehicle. Establish the separate approval and contact for each segment.

Plan for gaps between segments

Before departure, clarify who accompanies the person through arrival formalities, where a ground team can meet them, and what happens if disembarkation or clearance takes longer than expected. Confirm companion seating and bulky luggage space with the vehicle provider, especially when equipment occupies the cabin.

Escalate if the plan changes

If the patient's condition or oxygen requirement changes before departure, revisit the clinician's assessment and notify the airline and ground provider. For an immediate emergency at the airport, seek help from airport emergency services instead of relying on a prebooked transfer.

Useful details for a first enquiry

  • Can the passenger sit, stand and transfer with help?
  • Which support was requested for the flight, and separately for the ground journey?
  • Arrival flight, receiving destination and companions
  • Whether oxygen, stretcher or monitor is specifically requested by the treating team

A route and support summary is enough to start; discuss detailed records directly by email with the coordinator.
