Returning a patient to China: who confirms the receiving hospital?
The decision that prevents a return journey from ending at the airport without an agreed destination.
The receiving pathway comes first
Ask whether the intended facility has agreed to assess or receive the patient, where they should present on arrival, and who can speak for the facility. A hospital name written on a journey plan is not an admission guarantee. Some cases need urgent assessment, while others require a planned ward or specialist review; the receiving provider decides the route.
Separate clinical and travel approvals
The current treating team assesses the person's support needs; the airline decides whether and on what terms it will accept the traveller; the receiving provider decides its ability to accept the patient. Ground coordination connects those decisions but cannot override any of them. Airline medical forms and equipment rules differ, so confirm requirements directly with the carrier.
Build the route in both directions
The sending team should have a handover plan to the departure airport. On the China side, plan the airport meeting point, suitable vehicle, contactable family member and destination contact. Allow for immigration, customs and baggage; a time printed on the ticket is not the time the patient will reach the vehicle.
Urgent medical arrivals are a separate process
Shanghai Customs describes coordination among the airline, airport, border authorities, emergency services and receiving hospital for an emergency patient arriving from abroad. That answer concerns a severe case; it does not promise an expedited channel for every medical traveller. Ask the responsible parties to confirm whether any special procedure applies to the actual case.
Useful details for a first enquiry
- Country and city of departure, planned flight or air ambulance arrival
- Receiving city, hospital and whether acceptance is confirmed
- Mobility and support level stated by the treating team, without posting records in a web form
- Overseas clinical contact, family contact in China and decision maker for changes
A route and support summary is enough to start; discuss detailed records directly by email with the coordinator.
